Why We Created the Continuance Pendant

We never set out to start a jewelry company.

We're Brett and Martina Durbin, and ThinkLove Courage began the way we suspect most honest things begin — not with a business plan, but with a story we couldn't put down. We founded TLC in 2025, and from the first day we've thought of it as a movement, not just a brand: a way for people to carry their stories with courage, not a company that happens to sell jewelry.

ThinkLove Courage began with pain — the kind that doesn't announce itself cleanly, doesn't follow a schedule, and doesn't care how much you have to lose. The kind that arrives in the darkest hours and makes the weight of everything feel unbearable. We know what it is to stand in that place. We know what it costs just to stay.

And then came the questions.

Not unanswered questions. Not why in the abstract sense. These were the questions that pull you back when nothing else can. What would happen to the people who love you? Who would carry that weight? How far would the hurt travel? Who else might be sent to the same dark place you were standing in? The faces of the people we love most came rushing in — not as pressure, not as obligation, but as the purest reason we knew to fight. To stay. To choose the harder, braver path.

Those questions didn't just save us. They became the entire reason this pendant exists.

Because here is what we kept coming back to: in the hardest moment, a person needs something to hold. Not a slogan. Not a poster on a wall. Something in their hand — something physical, something real — that asks the questions their pain is trying to drown out. Something that says: before you decide, feel this. Think. Who loves you? Who needs you here? What happens to them if you go?

That is what the Continuance Pendant was built to be. Not just a piece of jewelry to wear. A thing to hold in the dark — a touchstone that prompts the questions that keep the flame burning through the tears, and leads you back to continuation.

We're not going to say more than that about where this began, and we may never. But we didn't need to tell the whole story to know we needed to build something for it.

We looked at the semicolon movement with enormous respect. That small punctuation mark — the choice to continue a sentence rather than end it — has given millions of people a way to say something that's nearly impossible to say out loud. Some of the bravest people we know wear it.

But when we sat with our own story, we felt like the semicolon alone wasn't the whole sentence. Where were the tears? Where was the fire that somehow kept burning through them? Where were the questions — the ones that saved us — the ones that could save someone else?

We wanted a symbol that told the truth about continuing: that it's not clean, not linear, and not quiet. And we wanted something a person could wrap their hand around in the dark and feel the whole story at once — the pain, the fire, the questions, and the continuation. So we started sketching.

What eventually became the Continuance Pendant — now patent-pending — is one flowing form that tells its story in three movements:

The teardrop & the flame

The form begins with a teardrop, because we refused to make a symbol that skipped the sorrow. It acknowledges the pain — the weight of the hardest moments, the consequences that ripple outward, the grief that doesn't resolve on a schedule. And held within that curve is the Flame of Life: burning brightly for the enduring potential and spirit of every person. The flame is the part of a person that hardship cannot put out. It is why our tagline is what it is: Every Flame has a Story.

The question mark — think

Turn the form and it becomes a question mark — urging us to pause, stop, and think deeply before taking the next step. These are the questions that save lives. The faces. The names. The love we couldn't bear to wound. The ripple of pain that would travel further than we could see. Hold the pendant and feel the question mark beneath your fingers. Let it ask what your pain is trying to silence. Continuing doesn't require answers. It only requires asking the questions that pull you back — and taking the next mindful step.

The semicolon — love & courage

The entire structure resolves into the elegant curve of a semicolon: the universal sign of continuation. A sentence that could have ended, and didn't. Its flowing curve is love — the fundamental self-care and empathy required to heal and move forward; a promise of love to yourself, or a declaration of unwavering love and support for someone else. And the semicolon itself is courage — the courage to keep writing your story, or the courage to honor the memory of a flame that now burns in your heart.

Together, the one form says what we could never fit into words: a story that holds fire, tears, and the questions that saved us can still continue. This is more than jewelry. It is a philosophy forged in Continuance — and it was designed to be held.

We'd love to tell you the pendant flowed elegantly from our pencils. The truth is better. It began as concept sketches — rough ones, more fragments and curves than finished illustrations — and the concept grew from there. Digital design tools helped us fine-tune the form when our drawing skills ran out. Then, needing something we could actually hold, we tried clay modeling. Clay had other plans: our attempts looked nothing like the vision, and we have the photos to prove it. So we bought our own 3D printer — and that's when the design really took shape, print by print, finally in our hands. From there, outside 3D CAD experts refined every curve until the design was ready to be cast in precious metal.

We're launching in .935 Argentium Silver — brighter than sterling, and a standard it actually exceeds — because the first flame should be the metal itself. And because stories come in different tones, three more expressions will follow: Black Rhodium, 14k Rose Gold Vermeil, and 14k Gold Vermeil — a thick layer of 14k gold bonded over solid Argentium silver, precious metal throughout. Our waitlist will be the first to know as each one arrives.

Later we added the Birthstone Collection — all twelve months — because so many of the people we talked to wanted the pendant to hold a specific story: a birthday, an anniversary, a person. Every version is in the collection.

We'll share more about how each piece is made in another post, because the process itself became part of the meaning for us: something shaped slowly — with more wrong turns than we expected — into something that lasts.

The name holds the three things we kept returning to in our hardest seasons — and the pendant literally carries them.

The name and the symbol are the same sentence, written two ways.

We're under no illusion that a pendant fixes anything. It doesn't bring anyone back. It doesn't quiet a hard mind. What we believe — because we've lived it — is that the right object in your hand at the right moment can ask the question that saves your life.

Our hope is that the Continuance Pendant becomes that for you or someone you love: something to hold in the dark that asks the questions pain tries to silence — a touchstone at the collarbone on the good days, and something to wrap your hand around on the days that aren't. A reminder that your flame is still burning. That the people who love you need you here. That your story isn't over.
